Our campaign is making significant progress:
- The Welsh government confirmed in July that it will introduce legislation before the next election to ban candidates and members of the Welsh Parliament from deliberately lying to the public. This followed a concerted campaign by members our friends at the think-tank Compassion in Politics. We are now working with them to ensure that electoral ad regulation for fact-based claims is included in this legislation.
- The cross-party House of Lords Democracy & Digital Technology Committee, that we gave evidence to, unanimously recommended electoral ad regulation in 2020.
- We’ve demonstrated that electoral ad regulation can work in a general election by running our Election Advertising Review panel (EARP) in the 2024 General Election. It was chaired by David Puttnam (who chaired the above House of Lords Committee) and included seven people from inside and outside the ad industry including Chris Morris Full Fact’s CEO and representation from advertiser trade body The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising.
- We’ve used as part of the panel an election advertising code which commits parties and candidates that sign up to it to making “every reasonable effort not to mislead voters”. It has gained significant support including in the May 24 mayoral elections 6 London Mayor candidates signing up including Labour (Sadiq Khan), The Green Party and Liberal Democrat candidates. Other notable supporters have included Neil Kinnock, Andy Burnham and Tracy Brabin.
- Several Parties now officially support electoral ad regulation including the Green Party, the Alliance Party, and Plaid Cymru.
- The Advertising Standards Authority updated its position in 2020 to say that it is happy to help with regulation.
- Due to the growing theme of lying in politics over the last few years we’ve noticed that almost all MPs that we now speak to from opposition parties (pre the 2024 General Election) support it.
- Liz Saville Roberts MP included our ask in a private members bill in 2022 also.
We are the only organisation devoted to campaigning for regulation to stop lies in political advertising. This progress would not have happened without us. We’ve done all of this on a shoestring and by relying on unpaid volunteers. However, the reality is that we can’t continue the campaign and be as impactful as we need to be following the 2024 General Election without your donations.
If you want to see the evidence for yourself of how widespread electoral ad disinformation is you can read our reviews on the last few electoral processes here. The report covering the 2019 general election is a good place to start. You can also see Lord Puttnam being interviewed by Byline TV about our campaign here.
You can give your money to many good causes. However, due to the small size of our organisation and limited time we can devote to fundraising your donation will make a tangible difference to our ability to continue campaigning. If you feel as passionately as we do about the need to have rules to prevent lies in electoral ads (like the £350 million Brexit “battlebus”) please consider supporting us.
If you’d like any any more information about our campaign before donating please email Alex at alex(dot)tait(at)reformpoliticaladvertising(dot)org.
We’d be happy to talk to you.
